Degrees
In Trinidad, part of understanding the culture is understanding that obtaining a quality education is one of the most crucial parts of growing up and becoming an adult. Trinidadians take much pride in their accomplishments especially when there was great sacrifice to obtain them. In Trinidad and Tobago, parents push for education, education, education. The school systems are much more structured and disciplined. Children are pushed harder, so when graduation comes along they can appreciate it much more. Graduation can be one of the greatest moments of a persons life. When coming from a third world country like Trinidad where it is very likely for someone to have been the first to graduate in their family, obtaining a degree represents much more than the last 3-4 years spent at a certain institution.
How much pride can be determined from where they put their degree. Some people put it up in an office, or on a mantle, or some people just leave it to collect dust in a corner. This all depends on how much value someone places on this accomplishment, which is very dependent on the culture. How much importance people place on this marker is represented by the location. When people are very proud of their alma mater and accomplishments, they put their degrees on the wall of a home or work office. However some people do not value it as much and could leave it to collect dust in a forgettable location.
