Fun Home by Alison Bechdel is a tragicomic and part of this genre includes unhappy endings for stories. Usually comics are looked at as whimsical and are expected to have a happy ending for the characters. However, I chose to follow Bechdel by ending my comic in a way that was not expected. My comic does not have a happy ending but the story has a life lesson that I remember to this day. The main character in Fun Home also dealt with an unhappy ending that shaped who she became in the long run.
I was also inspired by one of the English 101 Spring 2013 students named Yujun who used a very simple comic and addressed the idea of a loss of something important. I channeled these same ideas in my comic.
Here are some images from Yujun's comic that were inspirational to me. Her drawings were very simple but expressed the idea very well. She also talked about the loss of her teddy bear that meant a lot to her. Usually comic's do not address sad feelings, but she chose to do so which was decently different.
