In there time, there weren't "bad kids" in class, like you hear of today in America's public school systems. Teachers did not put up with disrespect or malevolent behavior. Due to this, student's were very serious in class. Without the extra distractions, they were able to completely focus on their work and put their best foot forward.
Students like Wendy, Lisa, and Derek didn't wish to just pass, like many American students today. It was about more than just getting by, it was about trying to be the best. There were several people around to help with this positive motivation, including fellow peers and parents. Everyone wanted to be the best and the brightest and they put in the work necessary to do so.
All of the interviewees appreciated the fact that they learned in such a disciplined manner. This helped them when they came to pursue higher education in the United States. They could see the difference between themselves and the students around them. They were more hardworking and deliberate than those around them and it payed off in the long run.
